Nala - October 2010 to May 25, 2013
I was never sure if Nala was the young mom or if she was just an Auntie, and never did figure it out. She was a lucky girl that day though. Some girl had decided to get rid of all her feeder rats she'd been breeding, and then as an after-thought tossed in her 2 PET rats into the group as well and was offering them to petstores and people as feeders...with Moon's wonderful help, we saved all these rats...

Unfortunately the bad breeding, the lack of socialization for the parents and the imprinted fear of their lives made them very spooky, untrusting rats all their lives...well except for Nala, the young blue girl who found herself taking care of a group of babies that were just a bit younger than herself. But she buckled down to her task and did a great job.
Just a baby herself.

Watching over her charges carefully

Much happier when it was separation time and she only had the 4 girls left to handle. LOL
Nala with baby Adella

The the feral petsmart girls joined, and Keiran after he was neutered, a nice big happy family. :D

Always posing for me

Nala and Adella all grown up

Aging, she's over 2 here

She stayed with her girls until recently I noticed she was becoming very frail and uncoordinated...poor Nala had PT. She joined Perses on the bed, but sadly the bromocriptine didn't do much for her, so she went onto steroid therapy, and even that wasn't a great response either, but she trundled on, sleeping a lot, eating a lot, and cuddling with her friends a lot. She was so sweet and gentle, everyone loved her, even jittery, nervous Nell.
Then she met Morry...she became his soul mate. She knew he needed her, and she went to him...comforted him and made his last days on earth as pleasant as possible. Right after he arrived

Just before he left

Then Malcolm joined us...and he HATED Nala...Nell he respected, Nala he was mean to. I had to put her and Nell into their own cage for awhile and she seemed to enjoy that for awhile. Then Mal changed his mind...now he wanted to protect her and care for her. Silly old man why couldn't you have figured this one out earlier?

He would rudely shove under her until she was resting her head on his back...then he would lie still and even sleep quietly with her.

Last night, Nala seemed extra quiet...she cuddled up with me as I watched TV and before I went to bed, I warmed up her snuggle safe, tucked it under the hammock under her Rody Tunnel, and she cuddled up it and went to sleep. This morning she was in the same position.
She had joined her Nell.
Goodbye bright eyes. :
