Randy – January 2008 to December 10, 2009
Randy was a fairly recent foster of mine. Her mom had had her since she was a baby, but life changed with her mom and she was going to have to move in with an extremely rat-phobic friend. Her mom found a new home for her and everything was just fine. Well fine until the new adopter bailed on her in the last few days before the move. She pleaded with her phobic friend but it was a true phobia. So Randy and her 4 daughters came here. Randy was a bad black with lots of rusting and thinning fur over the back of her neck and shoulders. She was very very sweet, but I didn’t get to know her in the first little while as much as I wanted.
She always stayed on the couch with me even when everyone was roaring around. Sadly recently I heard a crackle from her and but her on baytril for a URI. A couple of days later, I heard horrible gasping, and realized that Randy was the one gasping and choking! I pulled her out of the cage and realized she had blood in her ear canal so she had likely burst an ear drum from an inner ear infection. L I couldn’t give her oral meds anymore since she would’ve aspirated it into her lungs. I started her on rescue shots in sub-cutaneous injections, and I thought she was responding a little. She refused to go back into her cage so had the roam of my place at night and the day. She would come out to greet me when I got home, and I would pat and kiss her. She often followed me from room to room. She got nice liquidy meals served to her that she could lick up easily, and I had Ensure and water in small bowls in both rooms for her.
The other night I even had the wee babies out with her and she seemed content, she would just close her eyes when they would climb all over her, but seemed happy about it.
Poor Randy should’ve improved, but like many an older rat just didn’t, so today I took her to my beloved Dr. Munn who helped her gently from this world. I shall miss you little lady, I shall take care of your girls for you now.

Last night she slept on the bed with me for the most part. I stayed awake a lot because she wanted pats and reassurance and then would calm and sleep again. She slept on me, or near me, and as tired as I was, it was Right.
