Renata - 01/15/05 to 11/04/06 :'(
When I watched you and your sister month after month not getting adopted from the shelter, I worried. You had been there your whole life and when I inquired about you two, I heard you had been sweet but now were biters and weren't handled much anymore. Then I saw you had your 1 year birthday a day after mine and resisted no longer.
You made me bleed all over the shelter floor with that bite, but you had every right to be mistrustful.
I named you Renata as it is Latin for Reborn and you deserved to be reborn after living your life in the shelter. After some patient work, your biting became a cheeky nip to make sure I was on my toes, and then it became little nibbles. You became one of my sweet rats, but one of those who recognized and appreciated the second chance you were given.
I have been agonizing over the quality of your life lately. You have had respiratory issues the whole time and it had gotten even worse, and then you developed an inoperable mass on your throat and your inguinal area as well. You got soo thin, even when I was trying to get those high energy foods into you. You were living from injection to injection of dexamethasone, but boy did you live in between! Your eyes were always bright and happy, you loved your food and even ran on your wheel as much as you could.
Today you were first of the Horde to the open cage door and I wish I had kissed your head then and taken you out for a cuddle, instead of telling you I would have you out later, and it was time to sleep. And sleep you did. Peacefully to sleep you went.
My brave little girl is gone, survived by her very healthy sister and her 11 cagemates.
Breathe deep and play hard at the Bridge (as I know you will!!) my sweet little nibbler and visit me often..
Here is her shelter pic (Renata is on the right)

Here she is her first night home
