Rhesus - June 2010 to April 2/12 :’(
Oct 17th, 2010, 2 baby boys came into my life. The one boy was the “ugliest rat they had ever seen” and the other one was tilty and not much better. These boys supposedly were bought at a open market, but I now have my suspicions they were bred by a local rescuer who supposedly had taken them in but couldn’t keep them :( So I took in the wee ones and named them Rhesus and Gibbon. They had coarse odd hair so I called them my Monkey Boys.

My friend who is good at knowing certain things told me that Rhesus was the one who needed me…this was the tilty boy, unlike the frailer, odd but sweet looking little Gibbon…Naaah, you cannot be right this time!
Gibbon sadly had a sudden and traumatic passing in my hands about 4 nights later, so I thought “Well maybe she is right, now that he’s alone and without his brother” . Rhesus was a brusque happy boy, a bit rough with his affections, but he loved to play.

He was soo agile and unaffected I was sure he had a residual tilt, not an active infection. Think again! When he was very young he started exhibiting some very hormonal behaviours, so I had him neutered and my vet looked into his ears and found the infection. He was put on a nice long course of abs and he became positively bouncy once he was all better :D
My first cuddle session after his neuter.

He now kangaroo hopped and bounded everywhere when we played. To give you an idea of how bouncy the little man was, Rhesus was doing his laps, and Keiran was "suddenly" in his way so he just bounced right over top of him HAHAHA. When he ran and then had to stop at the end of the bed, he sometimes leapt in the air and kicked out like the Lipizzaner stallions when they perform a Capriole.
Rhys (as my friend called him) was never kind to other rats, he was soo scared of them, that he attacked them, and since he didn’t have a lovely protective fur coat he always came off the worse when they defended themselves. Many many intro’s with females, young and old, young and old males, sweet rats, calm rats, not so nice rats…nobody was a fit for him even until the end. He would share his Out time but never His Cage. LOL
Rhesus and I liked each other a lot but there was no love affair until he was an older boy.
When he was 18 months old I suddenly realized that my very active boy, who was NOT cuddly, etc...had become my comforter. My neck and sides had felt absolutely bare since Hope and Eli both left me. Something had always felt like it was missing...until now. One night he slept under the blanket near me...the next time, he cuddled up to my side/back. Then he decided "I am going to stop pussyfooting around!" and just climbed up and slept ON me. He slept on my side, the side of my leg or my belly (depending on what position I am in, I am a very light sleeper and shift a lot)...he's a nakie so he's a hot water bottle, and loved a bit of bare skin to warm his chilly toes on...of course that bit of skin would get all comfortingly toasty with him on it LOL...he stayed ALL night with me, with brief excursions for a drink or something similar, and he's even begun licking me! My brusque boy was now my Comfort. I slept so much better with him out...as I said something was missing, and Rhesus was stepping up to fill the void.

My friend said that Rhesus had just been waiting for his Turn in my life/affections, and we had 4 lovely months together until he had to leave.
You awake?

February 9 Rhesus went to my vet because he was losing weight, he was not as active and it seemed like his heart was thudding all the time. He was diagnosed with pulmonary abscesses. We started him on hypertonic nebulizing, new medications etc and he rallied for awhile on these treatments.
He even allowed my last RTR boy Huron to join him and keep him warm

Rhesus knew when it was his time to come out and time for us to go to bed. He would sit and stare at me…
“Get way from that Confounded Machine and let me out!”...I am powerless.

he would be annoyed not scared while he was being nebulized..

And of course the cuddling continued…

and some dreaming thrown in…this boy loooved to sprawl out, either on his own or over me.

He gets his first totally new cube just for him from Chelsey’s Cozies and Nokithis…he was soo happy

March 24th, everything changed…he developed PT on top of his other woes. He did not respond well to treatment and only 8 days later I had to let him go.
How I will continue to remember him…happily sprawled on me.
