Sebastian - Nov 10/03 to Jan. 22/07
This memorial may be a bit graphic for some people, I wanted to document (pics too) all that my miraculous Sebastian endured with as cheerful a disposition as imaginable.
Sebastian at the wonderful old age of 38 months and his new beloved girl Rafiki are gone. I let them go together on Monday morning. Sebastian had just developed small masses deep in his throat that grew very quickly. They were very tiny on Thursday night and by Sunday morning they were pressing on his windpipe making it very difficult to breathe at times. Rafiki was having some very bad days as well and I made the difficult decision to let them go together when I could’ve brought her home for a few days, but they would’ve been unhappy days. She only lived with Sebastian for only a week but they bonded sooo quickly and strongly you would think they had lived their entire lives together.
Sebastian came to me as a rehome with 3 other boys….my first real foray into Boyland….haha. He was 22 months old and the 3 others were older brothers. He was my cuddly bearcub. Small and stocky and cute.

I got him neutered and he ended up finally with his beloved girls, Selene, Soma, Portia and Ariel. But before this he had many trials, he had an abscess on his face, and before that was lanced he developed a horrible bacterial infection in the hind foot on that side.
The abscess didn’t heal properly so he went to get the capsule removed and that’s when we found out it was a tumour that had abscessed. It was deep and painful, and it changed his life. After that his other hind leg swelled up, and we had another fight on our hands. Then his eye on the tumour side went “bad”, and he went blind.
After that he had bleeding into his ocular bulb which took months to resolve.
He then became slowly paralysed but not like spinal nerve degeneration as his tail was very strong and he would whip it around to turn and balance.
This little boy was such a fighter and always a cheerful little man, he was my “Little Engine that Could”…he just kept going and going through all his setbacks, and not once did he ever get a URI, a UTI or anything like that, until the very end.
Everyone who met Seb absolutely loved him, you just couldn’t help it, he was a special little survivor, and was such a kind boy he took care of anyone that needed it.
Taking care of Soma when she was very ill and taking care of Tikal on her last night.
My favourite Christmas pic…I will make this into a card one day

Recovering from his tumour removal

Happy with his beloved girls

Paralysed but happy at 3 years of age

He is one rat that has truly touched many lives...people may not remember most of my other rats but they always ask after Sebastian. I will miss my lovely cheerful little man and I bet he is popcorning at the bridge with his healthy working body, and playing with the rest of my ratfriends who have left me recently. I don't have to worry about them anymore as my beloved Sebastian will make sure they are alright.
