Adella - February 2011 to November 10. 2013
Adella was the last of my Newmarket babies. These poor rats lived above the snake's aquarium jammed in a small cage thatere we wouldn't even keep ONE rat, breeding and waiting for the babies to be pulled out and given to the creature below who also lived in an enclosure that was much too small :( They were not loved or cared for because they were "feeders". The same woman had 2 pet rats as well, and they were handled and cared for as much as she knew how. Somehow they were a whole different animal in her mind. Until the day she decided she was going to get rid of all the rats, and then decided to toss her 2 "beloved pets" in with the feeders and taken them around to the petstores to get rid of them. Luckily a friend of mine saw this, contacted me, picked them up and brought the poor little souls to me. Adella was one of the many. Sadly this experience may have been ingrained on their psyche, and some of these rats were wary and timid all their lives, whereas others became the most wonderful little rat friends. The other issue with the Newmarket rescues was their health. We lost so many of them too young, to horrible tumours, respiratory issues, etc. Adella outlived them all, but almost to the very end, really didn't want to be touched by me. I could kiss her, I could talk to her (she was there all the time as she became a Bedrat) but as soon as the hands came out, she was moving away. She was only truly happy and relaxed with her sisters and cagemates, and when they all left her I had to introduce her to others which was traumatizing for her in the beginning, but she finally made friends with screamer Isa, who normally would chase other rats away...chubby body flubbing along, fur up, and mouth open. But Adella became her friend which made me very happy for these 2 lonely timid girls. Then Bree joined them and she was accepted as well by both. I finally got Adella to sleep with me and Bree for 2 nights before Bree left us, and she stayed and let me stroke her and even bruxxed for me. After Bree left...she came and cuddled with me all night, we had finally gone around the corner! The next day I noticed that she was coming out of her sleep box, and looking for me, and curling up near my pillow...so I cleaned cages in a frenzy so I could get back to her. She curled up beside me as I watched TV. That night she seemed restless, and she was moving around slowly (she had HED and was pretty frail by now) to places she didn't normally go to. She was breathing a little hard but there were no lung sounds. Finally she came back, pushed under the blanket, leaned up against my legs and was still. I let her sleep. She hadn't moved a bit, so I checked on her a few minutes later, lifting the blanket so I could see her but hopefully not wake her up, but she was already gone to be with her Bree, and her beloved sisters and former cagemates.
Baby Adella became a wheel runner immediately LOL
Bigger baby
Keiran and young Adella
New wheel!!! (it was put in the cage 30 seconds prior)
Nala (Auntie who came with them), Arista (sister) and Adella
My pretty shy girl
Adella developed a very fast growing lump on her neck :(
It was removed and she was put back with her beloved family. She was the first of the family to get strange malignancies.
Happy to be in the background, behind Dru
An older girl, still no-touchy, no-feely :D
Arista and Adella
The last pic of her with her original family and some new additions - Ophelia, Milton Adella and Nala, with Arista behind.
She's met so many rats, I wonder if they all are together again?
