Benjamin - September 2011 to April 2, 2014
Benjamin and his 2 brothers were throw-in rescues. There was an ad for a very frightened looking boy offering him up as a snake food. The title of the ad says it all "jumbo male rat *SNAKE OWNERS WELCOME!*" Jenny walked over to the location which was only a few minutes from her home to get him, and this is when she found that not only he was there, but 3 older boys who the girl hadn't have time to put up on kijiji yet. m Their fate was going to be the same, so Jenny quickly called me and said do you want them too? I said err...yes. So the 3 older boys, later to be named Noah, Bartholomew and Benjamin went into the cat carrier and the original boy Riley went into her jacket LOL
When she got home she told me about her experience. It seemed Riley attacked Ben when tossed into the group...never met before, no introductions, and this is what made his ad go up first It also seems that this person thought she was a rescue...sigh, one that offered up their intakes as snake food?...sigh
Safe but scared. Benjamin is the fat beige boy.
Their first hammock when Jenny was fostering them. She said they found her fascinating :P
They came to me a week later on April 5, 2013 and they had already started to slim down. Ben and his brothers were malnourished. Ben and Bart were overweight, with Benjamin being the worst and poor Noah was smallish and skinny. I got them home and they regulated back to a normal rat weight. Benjamin was the leader of the little trio, and was a good one...there were no scuffles or disputes in his home, he kept a stable cage for his friends.
Ben and Bart
Ben's mucky eye that took a long time but we cleared up

Normal sized again, sadly I had a poor camera so not many pics were taken from then on
Ben and Bart 8 months later, aging fast, Ben was developing cataracts inm both eyes and Bart in one. Noah never developed them at all but was a sickly boy.
His eyes a month ago...still going along okay, old and blind but still very active.
On the morning of April 2nd only Bart was begging at the front of the cage...I opened it up and topped up their lab blocks in their bowl, and I saw Benjamin looking a bit more frail and just older than before. He looked like he might be developing late onset PT, so I made a note in my head that I would take him out as soon as I got home to see what was going on...but then he grabbed a block and was happily devouring it with both paws...so I went to work.
I got home and my lovely blind boy was gone, lying on his side by his ladder...goodbye sweet boy. :(
