Chilly

Chilly - February 2013 to April 2, 2014 :-O

Chilly was a special memorable baby that I took in with her young friend. She has a wild story from the beginning. A sad one that makes you look at the things some people are teaching their children about animals and you wonder how these people will grow up?

The beginning of her story as posted on The Rat Shack...
Lynds of HH Rat Rescue forwarded me an email today from a woman named Nichol in Oshawa. Poor Lynds was off with her son Cole to the hospital again, as he had croup.  So I took over today.

Two weeks ago Nichol was out walking her dog and came up on some 8-9 year old kids who looked like they were throwing treats to their rottweiler. But when she got closer she kept hearing a squeak when the treat was thrown, so she thought it was a toy instead, but the dog never dropped them. Closer still to her horror, she saw these kids had a box of baby rats and were picking them up by their tail and winging them into their dogs mouth who ate them!!!
The woman, an animal-lover and a kind soul, confronted the kids, and got spat on! She grabbed the box and there was only 3 little babies left of which 2 died soon after. Little Chilly (she says she shivers and always seems cold) stayed alive. She heard Chilly "crying" in her sleep and heard that rats have to have friends so she went to a petstore and bought little Bella. Bella right away cuddled up to her new "sister". Chilly got sicker, and Nichol went online, found out a few things to try, called a vet and they told her $90.00 to just see the rat...she had lost her job and couldn't afford that. Her father told her she shouldn't care. She knew she had to do something so she called the petstore and their advice was to give her sharp whack to kill her. Her father told her she was stupid, and she should just put the cage outside and Chilly would die within the hour. Thank the rat gods Nichol refused to listen to these people!! She went onto kijiji, and searched for rat rescue, just in case there was such a thing...

With a lot of phone calls, emails and stressful waiting, it is arranged. My brother (who just happens to be going to Toronto tomorrow) will go to Oshawa first and pick up the girls then meet me after work.

Chilly was a sick baby, but Bella was even sicker. At the time I wasn't aware but Bella had been bought from a terrible petstore in Oshawa 3 days prior and had brought SDA into my home. Chilly of course then contracted it after we were struggling with her original URI.

She was one sick baby that Nichol sent me pics of

Once I got the 2 gals home, they brightened up a lot...still sick, but very much babies

Chilly was one very feisty happy little girl, as was sweet shy Bella.

Baby Chilly's body shape from above...babies should never look like this!

Chilly just wanted to be on me in the beginning, and then Bella came and dived under her. Chilly was content and she slept.

Chilly put me through the ringer, gasping one day, sick but energetic the next...but we persevered and made it through the other side.

I introduced the 2 wee girls to a motherly older lady I had named Luna...she got abused but loved her new little charges.

My happy solid small girl was a real clown and crazy active. Getting pics of her became harder and harder LOL

She would sit in her bowl as a reminder to fill up her blocks...then the mad stashing would begin LOL

Belly and Chilly became the nucleus for a new family, as these 2 were very accepting of any newcomers they met.

I regretfully had a terrible camera I hated to use, and so not many pics were taken with it, plus Chilly was a Runner with a capital R...she'd visit but be off in a flash, waaaay too many pics of her butt or her tail leaving as she flew away again...

"Sorry...your camera didn't focus in the time I posed pretty for that millisecond? Too bad, I have THINGS to do!"

Pics from February of this year...her markings had faded a lot.

Both Bella and Chilly had off and on URI's (mostly noise, not acting sick) but Chilly hadn't been on abs for months and months. She was happy, bouncing and fine in the morning, and gone that night...no idea what happened, can only assume the virus did some physiological damage inside her that caused her early demise. Its very strange to say Bella's name with out Chilly's

I am sure she's happily causing havoc wherever she is though.
